How do I compress a photo to under 100 KB?

What photo size do FPSC, NTS, NUST and MDCAT applications require?

Common Pakistani exam / admission photo limits (verify against the current year's official notification): FPSC / CSS 100 KB photo + 200 KB CNIC scan. NTS 30 to 60 KB photo. MDCAT / ECAT 100 KB photo + 200 KB signature. NUST / FAST / LUMS 100 to 200 KB photos. PMC / PEC 50 to 100 KB scans. Indian portals are typically smaller: UPSC / SSC 20 to 50 KB photo + 10 to 20 KB signature.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

How do I compress a CNIC scan without losing readability?

Two principles. First, preserve dimensions: do not downscale below the original document scan resolution, or the numbers and text become unreadable. Second, use quality 70 to 80 on JPEG to retain text clarity. If the file is still too large at quality 70, use PNG to JPEG conversion (PNG is often 5 to 10x larger than equivalent JPEG for scanned documents). Always preview at full size before submitting.

Will my image quality drop?

Yes slightly, but at default settings the difference is barely visible to the human eye. JPEG compression at quality 80 typically produces 70 to 85 percent file size reduction with negligible perceived quality loss. PNG images compress less but lossless options exist for diagrams and screenshots where every pixel matters.

What file formats are supported?

JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP for both input and output. You can convert formats during compression (e.g., upload PNG, output JPEG) when the target portal accepts only one format. WebP usually produces the smallest files at the same visual quality but check whether the destination portal accepts WebP, many older government portals still only accept JPEG / PNG.

Why are my photos rejected at 200 KB when I uploaded 195 KB?

Some portals enforce limits strictly using bytes (200 KB = 204,800 bytes exactly), others use marketing KB (200 KB = 200,000 bytes). To be safe, target 5 to 10 percent below the stated limit (e.g., aim for 180 KB if 200 KB is the cap). Also check the dimension limits separately, some portals require exact pixel dimensions like 600x600.

Is there a file size limit on input?

No hard limit, but inputs larger than 50 MB may slow your browser. For best performance compress one image at a time. Modern smartphone photos at 3 to 8 MB are no problem. Raw camera shots at 20 to 40 MB will work but take a few seconds.
