Pakistani university students hit a real problem when calculating GPA: every major university uses a slightly different grading scale, the conversion from percentage to GPA varies by institution, and most online calculators are American (4.0 scale with A+ equal to 4.0) which mismatches some Pakistani programs that use a 4.33 scale where A+ goes above 4.0. The result is that students often miscalculate where they stand for honors classification, scholarship eligibility, or graduate school applications.
This guide covers the actual grading scales used by NUST, IBA, FAST, COMSATS, GIKI, LUMS, UET, and other major Pakistani universities, the complete percentage-to-GPA conversion table aligned with HEC guidelines, and the common mistakes that throw off CGPA calculations every semester.
How is GPA calculated in Pakistan?
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average of grade points earned across all courses, weighted by credit hours. The formula is identical at every Pakistani university:
GPA = Sum of (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Sum of (credit hours)
What varies between universities is the letter-grade-to-grade-point mapping. Most Pakistani universities use a 4.0 scale where A+ and A both equal 4.0 (no extra credit for A+). A handful of specific programs use a 4.33 scale where A+ rewards exceptional performance above a perfect 4.0.
Cumulative GPA, or CGPA, is the weighted average of all your semester GPAs across the entire degree, weighted by credit hours per semester. Since most semesters carry similar credit loads, CGPA usually tracks close to the average of semester GPAs but is not exactly equal.
NUST GPA scale and calculation
The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) uses a 4.0 scale with letter grades from A+ down to F. Since 2013, NUST also applies a relative grading system where the cutoffs for each letter grade are determined by the class average and standard deviation rather than fixed percentage thresholds.
Standard NUST grade points (4.0 scale):
- A+: 4.0
- A: 4.0
- A-: 3.7
- B+: 3.3
- B: 3.0
- B-: 2.7
- C+: 2.3
- C: 2.0
- C-: 1.7
- D+: 1.3
- D: 1.0
- F: 0.0
To calculate your NUST semester GPA, multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, sum across all courses for the semester, and divide by total credit hours. CGPA at NUST is the weighted average across all semesters.
For relative grading specifically: NUST uses the class average and standard deviation to set cutoffs. So an absolute score of 75 might earn an A in one semester and a B+ in another depending on how the rest of the class performed. This is by design, NUST wants the GPA to reflect relative position rather than an absolute scale.
IBA Karachi GPA scale
The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi uses the standard 4.0 scale. Honors classification at IBA is awarded for CGPA 3.7 and above (cum laude), with magna cum laude at 3.85 and summa cum laude at 3.93.
IBA grade points follow the standard Pakistani 4.0 mapping. Where IBA differs slightly is in their handling of W (withdraw) grades, which do not affect GPA but appear on the transcript, and incomplete grades that must be resolved within the next semester.
FAST National University GPA scale
FAST National University uses 4.0 scale with the standard Pakistani letter-grade-to-points mapping. FAST follows absolute grading at most campuses, where percentage cutoffs determine letter grades directly. Common FAST cutoffs:
- 85% and above: A
- 80-84%: A-
- 75-79%: B+
- 71-74%: B
- 68-70%: B-
- 64-67%: C+
- 61-63%: C
- 50% minimum to pass
FAST GPA calculation follows the same Σ(grade × credits) ÷ Σ(credits) formula. CGPA carries forward across semesters with credit-hour weighting.
COMSATS GPA system
COMSATS University Islamabad uses the 4.0 scale. The grading system is similar to FAST and NUST, with the standard A+ to F letter grades mapped to 4.0 down to 0.0.
COMSATS handles incomplete (I) grades by requiring resolution within a defined window, after which the I converts to F if not completed. In Progress (IP) grades are used for thesis or research courses spanning multiple semesters and don't immediately affect CGPA until resolved.
LUMS GPA scale
Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) uses 4.0 scale. LUMS is well known for its strict grading curve and rigorous coursework. Honors classification at LUMS is awarded based on CGPA: dean's list typically requires 3.8 plus, and graduating with distinction usually requires 3.7 plus.
LUMS grading is generally relative for first-year courses (graded on a curve) and absolute for upper-level courses. The actual cutoffs vary by course and instructor, so two students with the same percentage might receive different letter grades depending on their cohort.
GIKI, UET, NED, UMT, AIR grading scales
The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (UET), NED University Karachi, University of Management and Technology (UMT), and the Air University all use the 4.0 scale with the standard Pakistani letter-grade mapping.
Minor differences exist in absolute percentage cutoffs (some require 50% to pass, others 40%), in handling of carry-forward courses, and in honors thresholds. Always verify with your specific university's prospectus or examination department for the exact policy.
How to convert GPA to percentage in Pakistan
There is no single official Pakistan-wide conversion formula because each university sets its own percentage cutoffs. However, an HEC-aligned approximation that works for most universities is:
| Letter Grade | GPA | Percentage Range |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 (or 4.33) | 90-100% |
| A | 4.0 | 85-89% |
| A- | 3.7 | 80-84% |
| B+ | 3.3 | 75-79% |
| B | 3.0 | 70-74% |
| B- | 2.7 | 65-69% |
| C+ | 2.3 | 61-64% |
| C | 2.0 | 58-60% |
| C- | 1.7 | 54-57% |
| D+ | 1.3 | 50-53% |
| D | 1.0 | 45-49% |
| F | 0.0 | Below 45% |
Quick answers to the most-asked questions:
Is 75% a 2.0 GPA? No. 75% in Pakistan typically maps to a B+ which is 3.3 GPA, not 2.0. American grading systems put 75% at a C (2.0), but Pakistani cutoffs are different. Always confirm with your university's specific scheme.
Is 97% a 4.0 GPA? Yes. 97% comfortably earns an A+ which is 4.0 on the 4.0 scale (or 4.33 on the 4.33 scale). 97% is well into the A+ range at every Pakistani university.
Is 90% a 3.7 GPA? Not exactly. 90% at most Pakistani universities maps to an A grade which is 4.0 GPA, not 3.7. The A- (3.7) range typically covers 80-84%.
Is 3.5 GPA 75 percent? Approximately yes. A 3.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale falls between B+ (3.3 = 75%) and A- (3.7 = 80%), so it roughly corresponds to 76-78% on a typical Pakistani conversion.
4.0 vs 4.33 scale: which does your university use?
Most Pakistani universities use the 4.0 scale where A+ and A both equal 4.0. This is the standard at NUST, IBA, FAST, COMSATS, GIKI, LUMS, UET, and most others.
A handful of specific programs (typically certain MBA, MS, or specialized graduate programs) use the 4.33 scale where A+ rewards exceptional performance above a perfect 4.0. Examples include some IBA executive programs and certain LUMS graduate tracks.
To find out which scale your transcript uses:
- Check your university's student handbook or examination policy
- Look at your transcript: if A+ shows as 4.33 grade points, you're on the 4.33 scale
- If A+ shows as 4.0 (same as A), you're on the standard 4.0 scale
The difference matters most for honors classification: a perfect-A+ student on the 4.33 scale graduates with a CGPA above 4.0, which the 4.0 scale cannot accommodate.
Common GPA calculation mistakes
Five mistakes Pakistani students make every semester:
- Using American letter-grade cutoffs. US grading puts 80% at a B-, but Pakistani A- typically starts at 80%. Don't apply US cutoff tables to Pakistani transcripts.
- Forgetting credit-hour weighting. A 4-credit course pulls more weight than a 1-credit course. Always multiply grade points by credit hours, then divide the sum by total credit hours.
- Including dropped or withdrawn courses in CGPA. W grades typically don't affect GPA. Don't include them in your calculation. F grades, however, do count and tank your CGPA.
- Confusing semester GPA with CGPA. Semester GPA is just one term. CGPA is the cumulative weighted average across all completed semesters. They are not interchangeable.
- Not verifying your university's specific scale. Most universities use 4.0, but a few use 4.33. Confirm before assuming. Check your transcript or student handbook.
